Final day on the Road

We had a great road trip, but by the time this day arrived we were glad to see it. I think we were on "new sights to see" overload and we were just anxious to finally reach our destination. We were travel weary and ready to find a place to call home. At this point we agreed with Bob & Shayla, we did not want to face another fast food meal. Even a sit down restaurant held little appeal and we were tired of any type of snack food. Our bottoms were sore and we were just ready to get out of that cramped 4Runner.

This is the view of the road that led to the Wildberry Inn. Looks a little isolated, but beyond the trees there really was a little town.

All day long we drove through country that is referred to by the Native Alaskans as "Land of the Sticks". The trees as far as we could see were this small. Stunted pines, some so skinny and tall that they looked like giant pipe cleaners. The view did not change much from this all day.

We reached civilization around early afternoon and drove through the Mat-Su Valley. We passed through the towns of Wasilla and Palmer. This area is known for the vegetables they grow in the summers. By dark we reached Anchorage and found the Air Force Base and our temporary home at the North Store Inn.


Not our particular apartment, this is taken out the back door of our apartment building and was taken a few days after we arrived. This is a common building on base, it is repeated over and over. Not a lot of imagination goes into their buildings here on the base and this color is used on almost all the buildings - housing, training buildings, gas station, Burger King, the fitness center and so on... A little challenging for the architect in the family.

We were glad to have finally made it and spent the next few days exploring the area.
