We are on the deck of the M/V Malispina. You can see the Eldred Rock lighthouse in the background. It is just south of Haines, AK, close to the end of our ferry ride. It was built after the ship, Clara Nevada, was found crashed up on the shore. It is a nice little ghost story, but too much to explain here. Google it if you want to know more.
Rick standing inside our home away from home, our stateroom. It was a cozy room with plenty of space for us. A vanity and small closet was located on the left behind the yellow partition and the shower/toilet were behind the blue door.
On the left side of this picture is the solarium. This is one place you could stake a place to sleep if you didn't want to pay for a stateroom. People would lay out their therma rests and sleeping bags and spend the nights here. There were heaters in the ceiling that helped to warm the area a little. I can see Josh spending the night here and really having a great time doing it.
The cafeteria where we spent a lot of time and ate a lot of good food! This was a room where people hung out and socialized. It was a good place to spend time during the day and talk to fellow passengers. The food was excellent with a new menu for each meal every day. All the staff on board were very friendly and helpful.
We had a great experience on the ferry and I would recommend it to anyone. It is not a cruise ship, but it does have a few amenities:
Movie theater - 6 movies to watch
Gift shop - a nice distraction waiting for the cafeteria to open
Forward observation lounge - a great place to watch the scenery along the inside passage
Deck - 8 laps around equal a mile. If you are acclimatized and being out in the icy cold wind didn't bother you. (We did do one lap at a time maybe twice!)
Friendly people - Everyone was so friendly, it was an easy place to meet people
One day Rick and I were hanging out in the cafeteria when we heard the purser come on the PA system asking for Bryan Louis Wells to come to the purser's counter. We both looked at each other and thought immediately "wallet". We tracked Bryan down and sure enough...someone had turned in his wallet! Hope he can get all the way to Anchorage with it!
We did have three rough passages, but the dramine and a nap helped us get through it!
We'll have to do an Alaskan cruise as a family sometime. I think it sounds like a lot of fun!
