The car deck. There was a method to packing the cars on the ferry that we were not aware of when we waited for three hours in line to drive on. The cars of course are driven on according to the place where they would be driven off. Since we were the 2nd to last stop we were one of the last ones on.
Every four hours there would be a call that the car deck would be open for 30 minutes for people to go down and take anything they needed from their vehicles or walk their dogs. We were surprised to see how many were traveling with pets. As soon we walked through the door to the car deck we could hear the dogs barking for their owners. We of course did not have a pet with us, but it was a fun little diversion to go down to the car deck and we were able to get some snacks to tide us over while we waited for the cafeteria to open. Did I already mention how much we loved to wait for our meals? Yea, we liked the food.
Welcome to Ketchikan! We joined an Elder Hostel group at this ferry stop. We went with them on a tour of a totem pole village. Bryan was a good sport and followed us on to the bus with all the seniors. It felt great to get off the ferry for a little while. We learned all about Ketchikan, (which I have forgotten), went to the local grocery store and stoppped off at the post office.
Rick enjoyed looking at all the different totem poles. This is just one of the many that we saw. Bryan and I would have enjoyed it more, but there was a cold drizzly rain and we wimped out. We headed back to the bus as soon as we could and the nice bus driver turned the heater on for us. We did learn that Ketchikan is the rain capital of the world (or maybe just the United States, or maybe just Alaska). They had 163 inches of recorded rainfall at the time that we made our stop...and the year isn't over yet! I am so thankful that Rick did NOT get a job in Ketchikan!
